Peter Layton

Service & Repair Engineer

Peter just joined us in February 2024. Here is a bit about him, in his own words:

I am originally from Lyndhurst in The New Forest.  Forests and heaths are my natural habitat. My dad was a jazz musician so that listening to records and going to gigs was normal to me from a very young age.

One of my earliest memories is being taken along to hear the Buddy Rich Big Band when I was about five years old, and me and my brother wanting to dance and run around in the auditorium to the music as if we were at home.

My dad’s day job was servicing telephone answering machines which, in those days, were the size of a large heavy briefcase. Sooner or later I became interested in technology too. Eventually I studied a City and Guilds 224 part 1, 2 and 3 in Radio, Television and VCR servicing at Southampton Technical College.

Since then I have worked in various technical roles in industry from testing, repairing and commissioning electronic equipment for companies including Racal Recorders, Naim Audio, Alstom, Autograph Sound and most recently ARRI Rental.

Somewhere in the middle of all this I took 3 years off to study a degree in acting (musical theatre) at Rose Bruford College. After that I went to America for a year on a 20 city tour with a dance theatre company production as a theatre technician.

Coming to Edinburgh to start a new challenge is quite daunting if one dwells on it for too long. Loud & Clear have made me feel very welcome and very much at home from the very first day.
