As we approach the end of 2024, I thought I’d share the best things I’ve heard this year. From hi-fi shows to in-store listening rooms and more than a few gigs, I’ve been lucky enough to experience some truly exceptional audio moments. Here are the highlights.
First on the list is the MOON 761 amplifier. It’s undoubtedly one of the most impressive pieces of audio kit I’ve encountered this year. I’ve listened to it in various locations and settings across the UK and Europe, and every time it has impressed with its power and precision. Whether it’s rock, electronica, or classic jazz, the 761 delivers every note with space to breathe and exceptional clarity. Crank up the volume, and it offers thrilling drive; dial it down, and it reveals even the subtlest details.
Each time I’ve heard the MOON 761, it’s been paired with the MOON 791 network music player/pre-amplifier. The 791 is far more than just a preamp – it combines a high-end phono stage, a streaming DAC, and a state-of-the-art analogue preamplifier. Simple to operate, it sends a flawless signal to the 761 amplifier. Together, they are a perfect match. With the 791’s clear display screen and the BRM-1 remote control, the user experience is nothing short of delightful.
Speaking of the BRM-1 remote control, it deserves its own spotlight. It’s the most pleasurable remote I’ve ever used – beautifully weighted, supremely tactile, and wonderfully intuitive. This industry-leading remote elevates the experience of using the MOON 761 and 791 to another level.
When it comes to loudspeakers, the MOON units (Zappa?) sound best when paired with Audiovector’s Trapeze Reimagined. These speakers blend 1970s styling with the latest audio tech, resulting in a product that’s as visually stunning as it is sonically remarkable. They catch admiring glances wherever they’re placed and sound fantastic in any setting. I’ve heard them in small rooms, large rooms, glass-walled offices, and packed demo rooms – they always sound fabulous. The Trapeze Reimagined speakers deliver a heap of fun, both in appearance and performance, that’s hard to beat.
Of course, it’s not all about the equipment – sometimes the magic of music is best experienced live. This year, the standout gig for me was Bob Vylan at Pryzm in Kingston (sadly, not the one in Jamaica). If you’re not familiar with the band, Bob Vylan is a duo delivering an electrifying mix of punk, grime, and rap with raw, intense energy. Their shows start with meditation before launching into a high-octane performance. The energy at the gig was infectious, and their socially charged lyrics paired with hard-hitting beats created an unforgettable experience. In a world where live music often feels overly polished, Bob Vylan’s visceral sound and sharp commentary are exactly what we need right now.
So, there you have it – my favourite audio products and live performance of 2024. As they say, 2024 has been interesting. Let’s hope 2025 is better.
Lastly, if you want to experience the mighty MOON x Audiovector system ft BRM-1, you know who to call!
Merry Christmas!
