Chord Company double-header: GroundARAY and Burndy cables

We were lucky enough to welcome Chord Company Managing Director, Alan Gibb, to Loud & Clear a couple of weeks ago, along with Area Sales Manager Joe Gormley. Alan and Joe spent an extraordinary amount of time lighting up our downstairs demonstration room over two days by demonstrating two brilliant new Chord products to a number of customers. We also had a sneak preview of a third, but we’re not allowed to talk about it yet – watch this space 😉.

For those who weren’t able to make it along in person, here’s a run down of each of the two product ranges we were listening to: GroundARAY and ChordBurndy.

First, Chord GroundARAY high frequency noise reduction:

Chord GroundARAY cylinders extract HF noise from the signal earth of audio and video via unused ports on your equipment – XLR, RCA, USB, HDMI, 5 pin DIN, BNC or RJ45 (Ethernet) – to effectively ‘clean’ the audio signal path and improve  audio and video quality.

We have listened to these extensively, as have our customers, and GroundARAY really works.

Next up, we have ChordBurndys: hand built to order to suit all high-end audio applications and specifically to offer Naim Audio users a new and clear upgrade path for their Burndy-equipped devices.

ChordBurndy cables offer Naim Audio users a new and clear upgrade path for their Burndy-equipped devices. Every cable is handmade to order and uses the optimum signal/shielding system, comprising silver-plated copper conductors, flagship Taylon® proprietary insulation, an acoustic braid, plus an anti-EMF braid, all protected by a black nylon outer jacket.

This project has been a fascinating journey for Chord and particularly useful, as the Chord listening room features a Burndy-equipped Naim NAP 300.

Chord developed several prototypes and immediately achieved individual improvements, but wanted the Burndy cables to transform the system, so employed the best materials and design techniques to create something that would outperform in all areas and across all genres.

Conductor gauge and shielding upgrades gave the biggest improvements. eg. for the Naim 500 series models the copper gauge has been increased to the maximum that the larger pins will allow.

Depending on your equipment combination there can be between seven and nineteen internal cables. The ChordBurndy can be a time and resource-heavy build, but the leap in performance is pretty fundamental and therefore, Chord feel, justifiable. The different custom-built Burndys come in at different price levels depending on complexity and the number of wires needed.
