All New Linn Flagship 360 Loudspeakers #LINN50YEARS

Linn 360 flagship #linn50years

Linn celebrates a remarkable achievement this year – it’s 50th Anniversary – with the launch of a remarkable loudspeaker – Linn 360.

Linn began 50 years ago in Glasgow’s southside, with the Sondek LP12 turntable. Half a century later, the LP12 is still revered around the world as one of the very finest analogue sources and Linn Klimax DSM is amongst the elite of digital music streamers. Now, all-new 360 loudspeakers join that world-class line-up.

Linn’s new reference loudspeakers have been completely re-engineered and re-designed from the ground up, incorporating a wealth of new technologies developed by Linn – new cabinet, new drive units, new electronics.

Allan and George attended the 360 premiere at Linn HQ last month and were immediately impressed by their striking aesthetic – visibly remarkable indeed. Beautifully curvaceous cabinets, intricately machined trim and range of dynamic finishes combine to present an overall aesthetic that is familiar, yet with ultra-modern flair and contemporary class.

Next, the listening: the best sound we’ve ever heard at Linn. 360’s tagline is audibly invisible and one which fits perfectly. These loudspeakers produce a performance brimming with clarity and realism that’s entirely absent of sonic colouration; you forget you are listening to a pair of stereo speakers. Incorporating innovative drive unit and amplifier technologies, 360 produces Linn’s lowest ever levels of audible distortion. The honed curves of its cabinet are partnered with meticulously matched drive units to deliver the cleanest possible dispersion characteristics.

We cannot wait to get our hands on our demo pair!

We are lining up some 360 demonstration events over the next few weeks so do get in touch you are interested in a listen – glasgow@loud-clear.co.uk.

Or if you’d like to be one of the first to hear these new flagship speakers, there are a few spaces left on our next Linn factory tour on Friday 28th April, 10am – 3pm, email barbra.g@loud-clear.co.uk to book a space.

The choice:

360s are available in two variants, as you would expect from Linn: Aktiv Exakt Integrated for partnering a Linn Klimax DSM System Hub or Passive with Aktiv Bass for partnering with source and amplification of your choice. The passive 360 can also be easily converted to perform in an all-external Linn Exakt system featuring Klimax Exaktbox and separate amplification.

The tech:

New 360 Array
An all-new driver array comprising tweeter, midrange and upper bass drive units immediately stands out visually.

The tweeter is the first 19mm Beryllium dome seen in the audio industry. Tooled by Linn, this drive unit now has all of its inherent distortion and resonance pushed far above the range of human hearing. The tweeter produces a startlingly clean and transparent sound; providing a wide open window to the higher frequencies.

The midrange dome is crafted from thin-ply, woven carbon fibre, a cutting-edge composite. This material provides the perfect mix of stiffness and lightness. Similar to the tweeter, any inherent resonance and distortion created by the midrange drive unit is pushed almost three octaves above it’s usable range.

Both upper and lower bass drive units employ an aluminium-magnesium alloy, also selected for its stiffness, thus ensuring precise piston-like behaviour without deviation.

New Adaptive Bias Control eliminates distortion from the amplifiers using real-time, dynamic management and correction; ensuring that they behave at their absolute optimum in all scenarios – for all types of music, at all kinds of listening levels.

Bass Drive Units

Aluminium-magnesium alloy bass drive units produce precise piston-like behaviour and can be driven hard whilst remaining firmly under control. The hard alloy materials add zero colouration or sonic signature to music. The Passive with Aktiv Bass 360 variant features an entirely new design of ultra-low-resonance passive crossover. There is no circuit board; rather the components are mounted using vibration-absorbing adhesive on a dense structure, with integral dampening and very low resonance. Current moves optimally through the crossover and the overall number of connections is minimised – dramatically reducing loss, distortion and interference.

Power DAC Bass System
Built from the ground up, Power DAC technology combines DAC and amp into a single step, thus extending the digital path and reducing loss to produce seismic, realistic and distortion-free bass, delivering lower frequency sound with more impact, efficiency and dramatically less distortion. Power DAC is highly efficient, ultra-low-noise and provides the perfect platform for driving the lower bass system in 360.

Dispersion
360 possesses extraordinary dispersion characteristics, resulting in precisely the same tonality from the speaker in every direction – reinforcing sound-stage. The curvaceous front of each speaker tapers from bottom to top, with shaped radii specifically matched to each individual drive unit. The speakers’ constituent drive units are placed perfectly flush within this smooth baffle, so that they emanate sound, out and away from the speaker, entirely without obstruction.

Critical to 360’s sonic character is the wholesale elimination of audible distortion brought about by the cutting-edge material science which drove development of the drive units and their subsequent integration with Linn’s latest amplifier technologies in both the Bass System and new 360 Array.

When these acoustic and electronic innovations are deployed alongside Linn’s unique and established loudspeaker technologies – Exakt and Space Optimisation – 360 becomes audibly invisible.

The style:

Linn 360 are available in a range of striking finishes:

The Glasgow Collection – Clyde Built, Single Malt, Linn Heritage
Classic – Piano Black, Alpine White
Custom – Yes – match any colour
Trim – Silver or Black Anodised

Designed expressly for 360, The Glasgow Collection is a range of curated cabinet finishes that celebrate Linn’s origins and Scottish home. These three special finishes are dynamic and complex; colour and texture play off the curves of the 360 cabinet under different lighting conditions and when viewed from different angles.

The Classic Collection offers a more subtle, monochrome palette: the timeless elegance of Piano Black, and the minimalist chic of Alpine White.

Machined into the 360 Array trim piece are a series of concentric arcs – symbolic of the grooves of a vinyl record in a nod to Linn’s origins and the Sondek LP12 turntable upon the company was founded. These grooves are set adjacent to a tweeter protector with chrome-plated Linn icon feature. The engineered trim is machined in-house from 5754-grade aluminium and incorporates ingenious waveguides to help facilitate optimum performance from the drive units which they surround.

The overall style and aesthetic of 360 is unmistakably Linn, but with a new and contemporary slant as this Scottish audio engineering icon embarks on it’s next half century. A fitting tribute indeed.
