AOTM – January 2025

Michael Kiwanuka - Small Changes

Small Changes is the eagerly awaited follow-up to Michael Kiwanuka’s acclaimed third album, Kiwanuka, which earned both a Mercury Prize win and a Grammy nomination. Produced once again by the powerhouse duo of Danger Mouse and Inflo—who also helmed Kiwanuka and its predecessor, Love & Hate (a firm Loud & Clear favourite)—this new record offers a fresh perspective while staying true to Kiwanuka’s soulful spirit.

This time around, the album takes a more stripped-back approach. The grand orchestral flourishes of his earlier works give way to a sound that highlights Michael’s languid, expressive voice, dreamy guitar riffs, and the nuanced contributions of a small but stellar ensemble. The lineup includes legendary bassist Pino Palladino and multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Jam, renowned for his work as part of the Jam & Lewis production duo.

Musically, Small Changes sits comfortably between R&B and neo-soul, but its influences extend far beyond. Pink Floyd-esque chord progressions ripple through the record, adding a dreamy, psychedelic quality. Tracks like “Four Long Years” evoke echoes of Procol Harum’s “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” while “Lowdown (Part I)” surprises with a Beatles-inspired guitar solo. “Rebel Soul” channels a cinematic, Gainsbourg-esque mood, showcasing Kiwanuka’s ability to seamlessly blend unexpected styles.

Every track has its merits, but standout moments include the title track, “Small Changes,” which opens the album with a delicate blend of acoustic guitar, understated strings, and heartfelt lyrics about transformation and resilience. “Rebel Soul” is an anthem of quiet defiance, while the dreamy, synth-driven “Follow Your Dreams” provides a euphoric closing note.

This is an album that rewards careful listening, filled with subtle details and emotional depth. It’s well-balanced, never repetitive, and brimming with creativity. Small Changes is poised to be remembered as one of the best albums of 2024, solidifying Michael Kiwanuka’s position as one of the UK’s finest contemporary musicians.
