Baby Face Willette\u2019s musical fire burned brightly but only briefly, comprising four albums in under four years plus a couple of sidemen duties with Lou Donaldson and Grant Green, \u2018Face To Face\u2019 is a highlight of that brief recording career and dates from 30th\u00a0January 1961.\u00a0\u00a0The session features Ben Dixon on drums and Grant Green on guitar, with whom Willette had recorded the guitarist\u2019s debut \u2018Grant\u2019s First Stand\u2019 two days earlier plus tenor saxophonist Fred Jackson.\u00a0\u00a0The album kicks from the off, the opening track \u2018Swingin At Sugar Ray\u2019s\u2019 is a fast-paced stomper.\u00a0\u00a0The mood is toned down for \u2018Goin Down\u2019 that positively exudes the Blues.\u00a0\u00a0The only track, not composed by Willette, \u2018Whatever Lola Wants\u2019 has a finger popping groove and it features Jackson performing a honking R&B style solo before Willette unleashes his Hammond.\u00a0\u00a0It is, however, only the hors d\u2019oeuvre, to the album\u2019s standout \u2018Face To Face\u2019, a stonking full-on Jazz organ Soul Jazz groove.\u00a0\u00a0It fizzes, flies and burns all at once and is one of the greatest Blue Note organ cuts of all-time.\u00a0\u00a0The positively funky vibe (in a Jazz sense) continues with the flowing \u2018Something Strange\u2019 that also cooks.\u00a0\u00a0The band sound as if they are having fun throughout the session, though the tempo and feel drops a little on \u2018High N Low\u2019 though the album\u2019s closer.\u00a0\u00a0It is still a stomping number.\u00a0\u00a0\u2018Face To Face\u2019 is a five-star debut and a must for all lovers funky Soul Jazz organ.\u00a0\u00a0A corker.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":25302,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false},"product_brand":[],"product_cat":[753],"product_tag":[],"class_list":["post-25324","product","type-product","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","product_cat-vinyl","pa_brands-blue-note-records","pa_new-used-new","first","instock","taxable","shipping-taxable","purchasable","product-type-simple"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\n
